Multistakeholder Dialogue at the Global Scale

International relations experts have studied multilateral negotiations among countries for centuries. More recently, however, a new form of global international has emerged. In these situations, non-governmental or informal actors are added to the mix. While such engagements may not lead to final decisions (because only nation-states can commit to act on behalf of their citizens), multistakeholder dialogue at the global scale involving all kinds of non-governmental interests have participated in preliminary or supplementary treaty-making efforts. These groups of included NGOs, INGOs, scientific associations, and various groups of stakeholders. When, whether and how to structure and manage such multistakeholder dialogues has been an action-research focus for PDP for multiple decades. We are very interested in the role that mediators, moderators, facilitators, co-chairs and other discussion managers can play in these situations.
